My father took me to watch The Cherries for the first time in 1948 and I never thought that I would live to see Premier Division football at Dean Court. The team on that day 67 years ago included names that are still indelible on my mind. Dai Woodward captained the side, Ken Bird kept goal, Jim Stirling was at centre half and Doug McGibbon (or Jack Cross) played old fashioned centre forward and Laurie Cunningham, Jack Fisher and Cameron Buchanan adorned the remainder of the team sheet. The venue was Millwall’s old ground, Coldblow Lane where 21,000 turned out to watch this Division 3(South) fixture.
I can only marvel at the fact that next season, I will have the option of seeing our current heroes strut their wonderful brand of of exciting football on the hallowed turf of The Emirates, Stamford Bridge,,Upton Park, White Hart Lane or Vicarage Lane. You will understand that living, as I do,130 miles away from Dean Court in Buckinghamshire, buying a season ticket will not be practical because I cannot come to every home game and I cannot imagine that invidual tickets will be available on any scale with a stadium capacity of only 12,000

    • Thank you for commenting John. It has been an amazing season and an unbelievable few days. For anyone who has supported the club for a long time, the disbelief is even greater and the glory all the more satisfying. Hope you can see as many games as possible next year – a few away trips will be well worth the effort.
